Watch: Donald Trump Refuses To Acknowledge Poll Loss A Day After Riot In The Capitol
Rather of admitting defeat in the 2020 US Presidential election, former US President Donald Trump displayed a behind-the-scenes video of him attempting to make a prepared message to the nation.
The select committee looking into the Capitol Hill Riots provided the outtakes, which also show Trump hesitating to make a special effort to denounce the rioters.
The current election is over. Trump was to inform Americans that the results had been verified by Congress.
But he was unable to.
In the footage of a speech intended to denounce violence, which was captured around 24 hours after rioters rushed the US Capitol, Trump is seen refusing to read what his staff had written and repeatedly altering the text.
He reads, "You will pay you do not represent our cause, you do not represent our country. To those who broke the law. And I'm not allowed to say that if you breached the law. I won't do that. I've already said you're going to pay.
He also takes back the speech's introduction. He starts, "I would want to start by addressing the horrible attack yesterday," but stops himself, "Yesterday is a hard word for me. Take the term yesterday; it is ineffective when used in the context of the horrible attack on our nation. I'm going to say that the integrity of the vote was my only concern. My sole objective was to make sure the ballots were cast fairly.
The former president also declines to read a section that declares the election to be over.
The sentence stated, "But this election is now concluded, and Congress has certified the results."
He announces, "I just want to say 'Congress has certified the results' without saying 'the election is done,' okay? I don't want to say the election is over."
He admits, clearly struggling, "My only purpose was to safeguard the integrity of the vote."
The panel looking into the Capitol Hill Riots has come under fire from Trump for becoming a "kangaroo court." He even went so far as to call Liz Cheney, the vice chair of the panel, a "sanctimonious loser."
"I had a rigged election that was taken from me and our nation. America is destined for hell. Do I need to be joyful? Trump accused the panel of being "corrupt and very partis" because they already knew the outcome and didn't like it in a post on his social media network Truth Social. An animal court! Trump continued.
